"Go Confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined." - Henry David Thoreau
The next school year will be here before you know it and if you happen to be in the graduating class of 2017 it’s likely to be one of the most memorable ones yet! If you are a parent and anywhere near my age, you probably remember your senior portraits (barely). More than likely you were posed in a generic studio setting with a black drape or for the guys a standard black jacket. Looking back, I think they mostly ended up looking like an unenthusiastic glamour shot.
Gloucester High School Class of 1989. (That’s me upper left with poof bangs and all.)
Even so, senior portraits are a long-standing tradition and for many will be re-occurring photos in their lifetime- whether you are proud of them or not. Those yearbooks are going to be hanging out in the back of people’s closets for a very long time and can be opened up and shared on social media at any point for decades. (Scary thought, I know). To this day my mother proudly displays my senior picture on our family wall of shame.
Today, senior portraits are an entirely different deal. Senior portraits are about celebrating adolescents as they cross over into adulthood. For many teens their entire senior year is filled with milestones, and it’s definitely worth celebrating in many ways, including their senior portrait experience. These photos will likely be the only ones that truly focus on who they are as an individual.
For both parents and seniors alike the occasion is marked with many “lasts”. Their senior year is about being on the cusp of something great, their future. They will never see the world the way they do at this point in time again. Capturing this with professional photography is one way of ensuring that you will never forget who they are right now. (And it will give you a tiny bit to hold on to when they are gone, because trust me, with this time on the heels of my own life, I know I’m going to have to face this myself soon enough.)
It’s not every day you have a high school senior graduating, so here are a few things you may not know:
- Senior Portrait sessions are for both ladies and gentlemen. Equally important and worth documenting with their authentic youthfulness expressed in their own unique way. Girls love to go all out with personalized accessories, top notch hair and make-up and with a carefully selected wardrobe. Sports looks or candid charming smiles are priceless memories for the guys. (And, even though I’ve yet to have one admit it beforehand, the guys have a blast doing them too.)
- You are not required to purchase the generic yearbook photos taken by the school, or “do” anything with them. Graduation announcements or invitations and pictures to hang in your home can be personalized and can serve as a valuable investment you can genuinely enjoy and treasure.
- High school portraits can and should be a fun and memorable experience. Capturing all that your senior is today and all that they are ready to show the world they ready to become is what senior portraiture can do. Finding a location that is meaningful, wearing those favorite pair of jeans, a favorite trend or just bringing their unique personality to capture their authentic self is what senior pictures are all about. It’s an experience in and of itself that result in having everlasting beautiful memories.
I would love to plan a personalized session for your senior and share the experience of documenting this special time in their life.
